How to set a discount maximum quantity on Shopify?

Store sales and promotions can be a useful way to attract new clients to your store, encourage past customers to return, and increase your store’s revenue. At the same time, you need to be careful with how often and how many products you discount. Is it possible to create a maximum quantity for discounts on Shopify? Yes, but you need workarounds.

Why Is Having a Discount Maximum Quantity on Shopify Important?

Coupon cutters and deal seekers have always existed, but e-commerce has taken things further. Limiting the quantity of discounts is important to prevent Shopify promo abuse.

Protect Your Profit Margins

Store promotions are supposed to use discounted items to grab attention and get new buyers “through the door.” The goal is to convince visitors to purchase other products that offer higher profit margins. What you don’t want is for a single customer to purchase 20 each of discounted items that you make very little on.

Prevent Expensive Errors

You’re human, and that means you can make pricing mistakes sometimes. Leave off a zero by accident and suddenly that $200 furniture item is on sale for $20. It probably won’t take long for you to notice the error, but without a maximum discount quantity, unscrupulous individuals may bulk-order dozens. Quantity limits mean fewer headaches.

Reward Loyal Customers

Shopify discounts can be a good way to reward loyal customers.

Sometimes, discount codes are meant to be a “thank you” for loyal clients. Unfortunately, promo abusers can exhaust your inventory of products, giving legitimate clients a bad experience.

Stop Competitors From Abusing Your Site

Unless you’re a wholesaler, you make your money selling high-quality products to everyday individuals. Your store isn’t there to enable competitors to buy your stock cheaply and resell for profits on Etsy.

Can You Limit Quantity for discounts on Shopify?

For most Shopify sellers, there’s no reliable way to limit the maximum quantity of products customers can add to their carts at checkout — not without creating custom code. We can’t post any snippets here because they can break your store without programming help.

Product quantity limit functionality is only available out of the box for Shopify Plus merchants. In case you’re wondering, a Shopify Plus plan starts at $2,300 a month, so unless you operate a massive retail store, it’s probably out of your price range.

One workaround is Shopify apps that let you create maximum order quantities for products. Minmaxify and Avada Order Limits Quantity are two examples of apps that give you control over product limits. This solution doesn’t directly help with store discount limits, though.

How Do You Set a Maximum Quantity for Discounts on Shopify?

To limit how many times customers can benefit from a promotion, you need to create a discount with coupon codes. Shopify also supports automatic store sales, but these don’t allow you to set purchase limits.

Creating discount codes isn’t difficult when you follow these steps:

  1. In the Shopify admin, click on “Discounts”
  2. Select the “Discount codes” tab.
  3. Click on “Create discount code.”
  4. Name your discount code. We recommend a name that’s easy to type, and related to your sale, but difficult for scammers to guess. Avoid “BLACKFRIDAY2025,” and use something like “BFRIDAY#PARTY” instead.
  5. Choose between “percentage,” “fixed amount,” or “buy X get Y” for the type of promotion.
  6. Select collections or products to include in the sale.
  7. For each item or collection, check the box next to “Set a maximum number of uses per order.” In the blank field, set the discount maximum limit for that product.
  8. Under “Usage limits,” you can limit the total number of codes available (such as the first 50 customers) or restrict the code to one use per customer.
  9. To prevent abuse, some Shopify stores use the “Customer eligibility” section to limit code redemption to existing clients only. If you want new visitors to have access to coupon codes, choose “Everyone” instead.

These features are available for all Shopify stores. The only downside is that it can take a lot of time to set product limits when your sale includes hundreds of items from different collections. To save time, you may want to create a dedicated collection for the promotion.

Bundle Discounts

Setting up bundle discounts can help you set a discount maximum quantity on Shopify.

An easier way to offer enticing promotions, protect your profit margins, save time, and set a discount maximum quantity on Shopify is to build bundles or use tier-based pricing.

That way, you automatically create combinations that are good for your bottom line. Customers can save money, but they have to buy three or four other products at the same time.

To create curated and custom bundles effortlessly, use a Shopify app. With StayTuned’s Bundle Builder, you can create customizable product bundles that incentivize customers to buy more while limiting excessive discounts. Automatic Discounts & Upsells streamline tiered pricing and BOGO offers, effortlessly protecting your margins.

How Do You Prevent Customers From Combining Discounts?

With bundle discounts, store credit, and tiered discount functionality, you don’t have to worry about customers abusing your promotions. You simply need to set pricing that offers customers a good deal without hurting your profits.

If you prefer going the coupon code route, Shopify has settings that prevent customers from combining multiple coupons or promotions. When setting up store sales, just make sure to check the “Can’t combine with other discounts” box.
